Desert Foods Fiesta

Learn how to forage, cook, and eat native desert plants.

September 25, 2017

Upcoming Events

What: Desert Foods Fiesta
When: Saturday, October 7, from 9:00am – 1:00pm
Where: Cooper Center for Environmental Learning, 5403 W. Trails End Road, Tucson, AZ

The best way to learn is to do it in a fun way, and thanks to the Desert Foods Fiesta you can do just that! This free event, hosted by the Cooper Center for Environmental Learning, will provide hands-on opportunities to learn how to cook with solar ovens, forage for prickly pears, and mill your own mesquite pods (for a cost of $3/gallon). Every desert dweller should know how to use the bounty of native desert foods that surround them, and the Desert Foods Fiesta is the perfect place to learn!

In between activities, be sure to catch a talk by David Yetman, host of Arizona Public Media’s internationally acclaimed show “The Desert Speaks” and “In the Americas with David Yetman” while you enjoy local food and beverages from vendors such as Native Seed/SEARCH, Big Skye Bakers, San Xavier Farm Co-Op, El Saguarito Restaurant, and Prest Coffee. Attendees will also have access to solar telescopes, which they can use to safely view the sun—you know, that thing that powers all of our food and energy. After you digest all of that, you can learn about installing solar panels at your own home!
