With Modernism Week winding to a close today, those who love midcentury design may be looking for a more permanent way to get their sculpted line fix. Encompassing the 1950’s, 60’s, and 70’s, mid-century modern furnishings, made popular most recently by the Mad Men television series, offer a retro feeling that fits into everyday life. Russell Shumate of Russell’s Retro Furnishings, an Edible Baja Arizona supporter, has witnessed this growth in popularity firsthand. “Mid-century furniture was once considered the ugly duckling of design. Today, mid-century style has come to be appreciated by furniture designers for its clean lines and dynamic designs.”
Shumate’s showroom specializes exclusively in the mid-mod period. “Pieces often come into our workshop; looking every bit of their 50 or 60 years of age.” Shumate states. “Our expertise in upholstery and woodworking brings the furniture back to life, often using the original fabrics. It’s what sets us apart.” Responding to demand, Russell’s Retro recently added custom upholstery to their client services. “Customers like being able to choose the fabrics and colors that match their home décor and, our extensive inventory, skills and experience give them that option,” explainss Shumate.
