It all started with farmers markets. Erica Montgomery, a freelance photographer based in Tucson, began buying her fruits and vegetables at local farmers markets. She would buy anything—whether or not she really knew what it was. “Over the last 5 years I have had a new food awakening,” said Montgomery. This awakening led her to convert to a more sustainable, local lifestyle. It has changed the way she thinks about food, where it came from, where it was grown, etc. “This lifestyle is one I will be keeping,” she said. Montgomery’s newest photography art show, Farmers Market Fresh, is her way of celebrating her new awakening, she said. All the produce in the show is the result of local, organic growing farmers.
“I want to bring awareness to our food system,” said Montgomery. She hopes to inspire people and spark conversation through her show. She wants her images to challenge people to think about the importance of eating locally and in season. For Montgomery personally, the project has opened her eyes to new ways of cooking and preparing produce, such as fermenting and pickling.
