What: Superior Prickly Pear Festival
When: Saturday, August 20th at 7:00 am through Sunday August 21st at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Main Street, Superior, AZ 85273
The prickly pear isn’t just my nickname when I forget to shave my legs; the prickly pear fruit (also known as “tuna”) is also a native food that is rich in uses and health benefits. The tuna is so diverse in uses that the city of Superior dedicates an entire weekend in August to a festival in its honor.
For those interested in sustainable living, gardening, homeopathy, food education, foraging, alternative food options, and overall health and wellness: this is the event for you! Even if you aren’t into all that stuff, you really ought to consider heading to Superior today and tomorrow to enjoy this celebration of the desert’s bounty.
The Superior Prickly Pear Festival started as harvesting classes and lectures at the Arboretum, and has expanded to a full blown festival needing two days to fit the full variety of activities and events.
You’ll find annual favorites such as beer making classes (yum!), trail hikes, a pancake breakfast (double yum!), and various kinds of demos. Among the other highlights: live music performers, food and retail vendors, historians, art galleries, a youth beauty pageant, a silent auction and guest speakers. There will be Prickly Pear refreshments at the Cactus Lounge, as well as dinner and a live flamenco performance by Zona Flamenco on the night of the 20th. You really won’t want to miss this.
