What: Plating the Desert Art Exhibit

Foil and wax paper linings, plastic trays, foam plates – just a few of the disposables on which our favorite and most convenient meals are plated on…Even “real” plates – the ones that we wash and reuse over and over again –remind us of our globalized world, where the things we buy and use are likely being made across seas in conditions we couldn’t imagine, and most of the time, don’t. So, if these are the two choices that prevail when choosing mediums to eat off of, what is the message?
These are the words that Stephanie Choi of the UA Students for Sustainability (SfS) program uses to describe her inspiration for the Plating the Desert project. The upcoming exhibit is made of ceramic plates crafted by UA and Tucson High students. Other pieces will be featured from k-12 students at schools participating in the UA Community and School Garden class, individuals in the The Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona Community Voices program, and community members.
Created by the Environmental Arts Committee in the UA SfS program, the Plating the Desert project seeks to showcase the intersection of environment, desert food, and community. To begin the project, six local artists and food activists spoke to the students, who then spent the semester crafting their plates, drawing upon background and inspiration received from the speakers.
Come for the opening event on the evening on March 8, 2016 (6:00pm-8:00pm) in the Student Union Memorial Gallery, and you will be served from a menu of locally-sourced ingredients. Pressed corn ears, mesquite leaves, and prickly pear nopales are just a few of the materials you may see and be served food from.
